The Past: Brighter? More Colorful?
Time to once again delve into another aspect of my feelings of being trapped in a time that isn't my own. If you enjoy reading this schizophrenic rambling then I thank you.
SO to elaborate on the title of the post, another sensation I've felt in recent years is how the world...Maybe even the universe itself has felt more...Desaturated...As if everything is dimmer, less colorful than it was 30 years ago, or even 25 years ago.
And I don't mean that in some philisopical sense, of course the world has gone to shit in every sense but I mean in the most literal sense possible. As I stated in my previous post my memories of the Y2K era are more vivid than even my memories of a year ago. I can practically teleport myself, immerse myself in those memories as if I was there again. And when I recall those memories...Everything seemed brighter, more colorful, more vibrant, another indication of the wrong time period I feel I've found myself in.
Now many might see this and think "Well of course, the 90's were more colorful" after all every piece of 90's throwback merch is full of patterns like this:
But I'm not even referring to that, though that is a separate rant I will go on later. But I mean the very world we live in, go outside, look around, everything you see is what I am referring to. It's all lacking in the vibrant color I remember so vividly.
Even as I go back and watch old commercials and content from the 90s-early 00s I can see color much brighter and more vibrant than modern day. Now one can easily chalk that up to tapes being more saturated recording mediums than modern digital, or even something I more recently learned: That our brains supposedly remember colors more vibrantly than they actually were. And you might be right, perhaps that's all it is, despite this knowledge I can't help but feel it every time I look around that the world's...Maybe even the universe's color has faded away a bit in the last 20 years...
Alright side rant as well, while I can't definitively prove that the world has lost its color, everything else sure has! The world is such a boring monochromatic place now. Remember in the 90s-00s when everything was colorful?
Like, think of Apple, what do you envision nowadays? Sterile, hospital-grade aluminum, about as corporate and dystopian as it gets.
But just 25 years ago? They were bright, vivid, colorful.
And believe me it's not just Apple, so many other things had color, had whimsy, had character.
Okay, yeah, every Millenial points to these of course, but even PHONES had color
Commercials? Much more colorful.
This screencap has mostly white and it's still more colorful than most advertising and products I see today.
Alright, I'll stop now, but seriously, can we stop living in a boring dystopia with no color or life to it? If we're gonna live in a dystopia I'd prefer Cyberpunk 2077, not fucking "The Wall"
